Sophie Allison, the Nashville songwriter behind the acclaimed project Soccer Mommy, has released her highly anticipated new album Evergreen today. Allison describes Evergreen as an album meant to evoke the sensation of lying outdoors with eyes closed, basking in the warmth of the sun and the presence of nature. “Even in your darkest place, a sunny day can wash over you and lift your spirits,” she explains, reflecting on the album’s overall mood of warmth and serenity. The album includes the track “Abigail,” a dreamy and captivating ode to the character of the same name—her purple-haired in-game spouse from Stardew Valley
Starting her career as a teenager, Allison began sharing near-demo tracks on Bandcamp, gradually building a loyal following. In recent years, her sound has evolved to include synthesizers and more experimental production, made possible by greater studio resources. However, for Evergreen, Allison felt a need to return to a more organic approach. The album was crafted in the aftermath of a profound personal loss, and Allison’s songwriting became a means of processing her emotions. Opting for raw, unfiltered production, she emphasized simplicity and authenticity, allowing her music to feel honest and relatable.
Evergreen was crafted as she navigated her late 20s, a time when adulthood’s realities start to replace the freedom of youth. During the three years between Sometimes, Forever and Evergreen, Allison learned that loss is not a singular experience; it can be harsh one day and unexpectedly beautiful the next, as memories become a guiding force. The title track encapsulates this idea with the line, “She cannot fade / She is so evergreen,” set against gentle strings and acoustic guitar. It serves as a quiet affirmation and a personal note of resilience. True to form, Evergreen began as Allison’s way of documenting her emotions, continuing her tradition of introspective, honest songwriting.
Evergreen marks a return to Soccer Mommy’s roots, blending the understated charm of her early work with a more expansive, cinematic sound. Acoustic guitars, lush strings, and flutes lend the album a natural, unembellished quality. The production is restrained, focused on conveying real emotions rather than overindulgent effects. The result is a record that feels both nostalgic and new, reflecting Allison’s growth as an artist while staying true to the heart of Soccer Mommy’s sound.
